According to such social networking services as Facebook, other schools, including Sejong University and HUFS, are ranked highly for their cost-to-quality school cafeterias. Whenever I read that, I think, ¡°Why wasn¡¯t my school selected?¡± However, I always used to know why whenever I saw Hongik University¡¯s cafeteria. I felt envy for the other schools, but recently there was news that new menus were added when the new semester started. Unfortunately, many schoolmates can see the pamphlet advertising the new menu in front of the student cafeteria and just think, ¡°Does that really taste good?¡± and then hesitate to try it. So, Hongik Tidings will introduce the new and exciting student cafeteria menu. Here we go!
Our school has four student restaurants.
Hongazit
Hongazit is also known as a student hall restaurant. There are staircases at both ends of the restaurant. Until the first semester in 2016, there were designated dishes, such as Rice with Kimchi and Pork, but Hongazit changed into a buffet operated by Handol in the second semester after accepting students' opinions that they were dissatisfied with the previous restaurant. Yakult is always served as a basic dessert. The menu for lunch and dinner changes every day, and the price is 4,200 won for students and faculty of Hongik University. Besides the basic menu, Hongazit sells Jjajangmyeon for lunch only. The price is 3,500 won.
*Recommended dish for reporters: I would like to recommend Jjajangmyeon, which can be eaten only during lunch. For the cost, the taste is pretty good. It¡¯ll be a nice choice to pick Jjajangmyeon as your lunch.
Nam-Mun Gwan Restaurant
Nam-Mun Gwan Restaurant is a student restaurant near the first dormitory which has changed the most among the four student cafeterias. I think the reason Nam-Mun Gwan Restaurant has had lots of changes is that it's at the end of the campus and is less accessible than the other restaurants. There was also a basic buffet menu and later Chubap, which is fried rice with various ingredients in a cup, and a snack items such as Tteokppokki were added. However, the basic menu is now gone and only Chubap and snack foods are sold. Different dishes from the other cafeterias (pork cutlets, chicken, ramen, Budaejigae, and dumpling soup) are here in good prices. I also often love to use Nam-Mun Gwan Restaurant after conducting a preliminary investigation. Additionally, you can take out all menu items except pork cutlets. Unfortunately, the restaurant closed on October 19 because of financial difficulties.
*Recommended dish for reporters: In Nam-Mun Gwan Restaurant, I would pick Chubap as the best item. Actually, most people were eating Chubap on the pre-survey day. You can also add toppings, such as cheese, kimchi, and tuna to enjoy a variety of tastes without getting tired of the dish. The cost-effectiveness is pretty good and the quantity is enough for one meal.
2nd Dormitory Restaurant
This restaurant opened in 2016 with the 2nd dormitory¡¯s opening. It is also called the New Dormitory Restaurant. Like Hongazit, it operates as a basic buffet run by Handol. Its price is same with Hongazit. In addition, Yakult, apples and salad as desserts are always served. Unlike the other restaurants, it is located in a dormitory. Thus, breakfast is always cooked unless there is a special reason for it to be closed. Starting in the second semester of 2018, another restaurant, Boombata, started sharing the same space. Its main items are Hwadeok Sandwich and Hwadeok Ssam.
*The reporter's recommended dish: I would like to recommend the double cookie cream sandwich from Boombata. Although Hwadok Sandwich and Hwadok Ssam are the main dishes, they are somewhat less cost-effective. By the way, the combination of cookies and rich cream cheese is fantastic. The price is 2,900 won, which is not bad for a dessert.
Faculty Restaurant
This restaurant is located on the 16th floor of Mun-Heon Gwan (MH building). The staff cafeteria is a buffet, just like the main menu of Hongazit and the new dormitory¡¯s restaurant. The price is 6,000 won, slightly higher than the cafeterias I introduced earlier. However, unlike the others, you can eat more if you are not full. In addition, the quality and taste of the food are much better than at the other cafeterias. It makes me feel like I've had a full meal. Green plum juice is served for dessert. One bad thing is that you can bump into a professor while eating, since it is for faculty.
Many students have their lunch outside of Hongik University a lot because there are famous restaurants around. After reading this article, why don't you have a good-quality, cheap meal at our school?
