What¡¯s your constellation? a love letter to my city, my soul, my base

Hyun Joon Yoo who is Professor, writer and architect asks you to think about your own constellation. The constellation means the moment and the place where your life can shine. Those are the things that you haven¡¯t reached yet or the moment you will hopefully meet soon. This essay gives you, one who might have lost your composure and pursued only special things, a message to look around. Following his stories, you can be reminded of places that you have passed by through his eyes. We can also speculate about your own stories through the blanks of verticality and horizontality, between letters and the photos. His places formed his identities as a human being and an architect. By catching up into his childhood, adolescence and treasures, how about sinking into your own starry night?

  1. Childhood. The Places That Made Me.

¡°The puny components of a city, like the stairs of alley, can be the special place when you see them through your life and experiences.¡±

Many people take the place for granted. However, the meaning of space itself is crucial for our lives because it is room where we can exist.

The space is also nostalgia that reminds me of the past. A broad and tranquil place sometimes tell us about the commodiousness of our lives.

Some spaces like school force us to perform group life. Like this, the space has its own personality.

The author has a habit that relates space with emotion. This helps him when he makes his designs. He applies his own experiences by thinking about a feeling he wants to get from the place and substitute it by taking it out of his own ¡®emotion drawer¡¯

  1. Adolescence, The Places That Made Me.

¡°The two-storied western-style house is nostalgic for me. The friends who worked with me, the yard with a persimmon tree and a lawn, and the living room where I spent time with my older brother were the memories I want to go back to. Those memories themselves are brilliant.¡±

This nostalgia are crucial parts that constitute a house, hometowns and cities for everyone. The author not only loves trivial things around him, but also experiences unusual spaces. He has broadened his views toward the space by staying at Harvard University, MIT, Machu Picchu and so on. The perspectives he uses to see those are impressive, particularly, the library in Axton was the most one.

¡°I think it is just a normal building, so I could have no foresight. The reverse inside it shocks me and gives me huge impression. That¡¯s the story of life. The concept of the space is not a substance, but information from one¡¯s brain.¡±

Maybe this perspective helps him to form his own unique designs.

Attitude toward a space is the greatest importance. We have to think about this question, ¡°What should I recall when I look around?

  1. Treasure Hunt – The Cities¡¯ Factors that are Very Special to Me

¡®The design is beautiful when it comes out as an inevitable consequence, not as a decoration.¡¯

Many people love the neat appearance of their cities. Others love the true picture of nature. Nature itself has beauty and is incomparable with other things. If we look at the city, however, we will think that the cities are beautiful even though it is artificial. Like the author, we can also call our attention through seeing the scenery on the rooftop house, simple shaped tunnel, Han river¡¯s bridge with concrete and the local bakery. All these are related to us, the beauty they have can make us love our space, cities.

He thinks that the edge of South Korea is Incheon International Airport in the 21st century. It implies that the space, where many people are, can be seen quiet, and we can be lost in thought and imagination. The cities are not always crowded and complex ones.

  1. Treasure Hunt- The Space Time of Cities for the Lovers.

¡®We endlessly paint the space around us to make it a meaningful space. The brush we use can be columns like a telephone poles and streetlamps, and chairs. The important thing is that this change can be caused by you.

He mentions Jeong Dong road and the ¡®two seconds tent¡¯. He implies that we need the space to feel sincerity from the love relationship. Between people, space means a lot. To be close with a person, conversation with 45degree angle is a great tip. The edge is the best place to get closed. Also, the architect is decided by one¡¯s position, so it is comparative. This means the characteristics of the space are not defined by one trait, and this infinitive attraction of the space makes you see the city with all your hearts.

He also recommends that if we want to feel the various aspects of the cities, visit those by your preference. The XL is Teheran Street, L is Dosan Street, M is Jeong Dong, Small is Insa-dong, and XS is Ikseon Dong. Seoul is not just a stuffy place anymore.

  1. Treasure Hunt- The Space-Time of Cities to be Alone.

¡°One reason why university life is good is that it is similar with the foraging era, which occupied the longest time of mankind.

This statement is necessary for university students. Life in university is free and independent. How much time do you have to enjoy this moment? Someone in university should enjoy this moment now.

In the middle of the crowded city, you can make your own space by changing your personal space slightly. Moving the bed into the living room changes the view that you usually see. This change of conception refreshes our monotonous life.

These days, people pursue to be alone, but most do not want to be alone in their heart. This paradox is well expressed through SNS. He said SNS is a self-display like a portrait of a noble in an art museum. This means real ¡°freedom¡± has gone because people care about other people¡¯s evaluations about them and judge their own worth by the number of ¡®like¡¯.

The very last part of this book gives messages, by putting the space deeply into readers¡¯ lives. When he sees a traffic light, he feels that life does not process by following your intentions. There are many situations that we feel like having to cross this road right now. However, your life does not always have a green light. If you stop and take a rest for a while, it may help you not to be in a hurry. Because, in some cases, after passing time, the red light becomes a green light. Just waiting is enough to overcome your difficulties.

Seeing the Namsan Ring Road, he says all roads lead to everywhere. Just the sceneries changed. As life maybe has not gone as planned, the road we have taken is the answer. The gathering of the second plan becomes the best. We do not have to inconveniently live by not asking questions like; Can we be successful? Every building has unextinguished light, am I turned over? Just look around. feel, and keep going along the road which is open to you. At the end of it, you can meet the happy you.

He evaluates himself as a narcissist. Because he regards that the love toward the world starts from the love toward yourself. The world is changed slowly with great efforts by people. The change of space is the same; It takes time and effort. A journey of a thousand miles must begin with the first step. Crossing several spaces, every event we face can not be beautiful. However, if there is any blurred light, we should make our own constellation and its stories. The constellation do not need to be the space itself, like the author says. If so, what constellation do you want to make in the future? Everything around and in you is the guideline for your own constellation
