The 2019 Hongik Press Summer Retreat

On July 17th to 19th, the four departments of Hongik University Press (HIBS, the Hongik Tidings, Wau, and HIU Press) went on a summer retreat. We had a meaningful time together during those three days. Starting from the next paragraph, each reporter of the Tidings is going to tell about their specific experience and how they felt about it. I hope that they all had a great time.

1.Juhyangro

On the first day, we visited Juhyangro, where the Kooksoondang Brewery researches and manufactures Korean traditional alcoholic drinks. They have actually been on a project of restoring Korean traditional alcohol drinks for many years and made some great successes. We could learn how many kinds of drinks are developed and manufactured, and we also had an opportunity to taste some of them.

  • Aruem: I could learn about Korean traditional alcohols and it really was worth visiting. Trying all the different alcohol was fun and I really loved how the whole building smelled. It smelled like alcohol but in a sweet and fresh way.
  • Suji: Since I went there last year, nothing was too special. But looking around the exhibition was still fun and interesting. Next time, if I have a chance to visit there again, I want to see more details about the manufacturing process.
  • Suyeon: It was my second visit to Juhyangro, so nothing was new to me. But, I had a chance to taste new kinds of alcohol, like draft Baekseju. It tasted really weird.
  • Taehwi: Even though it was my second time visiting Juhyangro, and even though I already knew the course that they provided, it was a little fresh to me this time. Especially, tasting the Korean traditional alcohol and learning about its history was amusing and pleasant.
  • Su-ah: It was the first time in my life visiting a liquor factory. From the famous company, GookSoonDang, I could learn that this liquor company is putting as much effort as possible to restore Korean traditional alcohols. Also, their printed words to welcome Hongik Press on the bottle was very impressive too.
  • Seoyoung: Except for drinking I was not aware of other information about alcohol. As I visited Juhyangro I got to know how our traditional alcohols were revived. That took a lot more effort and rime than I thought. At the end there was tasting program that I could taste different kinds of alcohols, as much as I want, that was the best part.

    2. Sheep Ranch

The day we went to a sheep ranch was so hot that even the sheep were sitting and taking naps. Due to the hot weather, it was not easy to stand in one spot for a long time to watch sheep taking rest, thus we wandered around the ranch, and the beautiful scenery of green fields relieved my accumulated stress. Also, we visited the place where we can feed the sheep. By looking at sheep closer, I could really see their rectangular pupils. It was really great to spend time there and if I can have another chance to go again, I will not miss it.

  • Aruem: I really loved feeding the sheep there. I kind of felt sorry for the sheep though because they were trapped in there. I always love seeing animals in person but I worry about them because I felt like we were stressing them by taking pictures and petting them.
  • Suji: When we reached the sheep ranch, the sun is at high noon. It was very hot. So as soon as I saw the first flock of sheep, I left the sheep rapidly. When I saw them at that time, my impression of them was not that good. They smelled bad and reminded me of fleece jackets.
  • Suyeon: I think it was not a good choice to go to a sheep farm in the middle of the summer. There was little shade, so I had to put on sunglasses. Sheep look cute, but they also look like they were suffering from the heat.
  • Taehwi: It was my first time ever to visit a sheep farm, and it couldn¡¯t be better. The weather was nice, and the view and the colors were beautiful. I hope to visit there once again on a private trip.
  • Su-ah: Even though the weather was too hot to spend time outside, all the experiences that I had from the sheep ranch became unforgettable memories for me.
  • Seoyoung: Since I have been to a sheep ranch before I was not that interested in visiting the place. However as soon as I arrived at almost the very top of the hills I was impressed at the sight I was seeing. Not only sheep caught my eyes but the greenery views were just amazing, so I captured beautiful moments on my phone.

    3. Gyeungpodae

After visiting the sheep farm, we moved to the famous beach, Gyeungpodae. It was as beautiful as it is described by many people or poems. It is especially famous for being a motive of a Korean traditional poem, and there, the poet describes how beautiful the coastline is. You can match his written expression with the scenery. We did not really swim there, rather we moved to a café so that we could get a better view.

  • Aruem: Looking at the beach always makes me feel so good. I wish I could get into the water but I did not bring my clothes to change so I just dipped my foot in the water and I felt so refreshed. The coffee I had looking at the scenery tasted so good too.
  • Suji: Winds coming from the sea were nice. The wind cooled down the sizzling heat of summer. It was a great healing for me to enjoy a smoothie and watch the sea view, sitting at the café.
  • Suyeon: It feels always great to see the beach in the summer. I was not ready to fully enjoy the water because I was afraid of getting wet, so I just soaked my feet. I was glad that I wore sandals.
  • Taehwi: As I had expected, the beach was pleasant. I especially appreciated the sound of tides crashing into each other and into the shore. I also wanted to stay longer, but it was time for us to go, which was a shame that we had to go so quickly.
  • Su-ah: To overcome the hot weather, dipping my feet into the water is the best to way to reduce the heat. As we arrived at the beach, we spent time to watch lots of people swimming and hanging around. It was so stress relieving, just by watching them having fun.
  • Seoyoung: It was a very hot day. Looking at the endless beach and sea was a great idea for that day but I guess maybe it needed some real dive-in activities to wash off the exhaustion. But watching the waves come and go was just enough for me.

    4. Hongik Press Conference

On the last evening, we had a little conference, where the four departments had time to learn about each other. We also had a little conversation with the professor in charge of Hongik press. Anyone could deliver their message in advance and the messages were read by the professor anonymously.

  • Aruem: I, as an editor-in-chief-, had to report what we, the Hongik Tidings, have been doing during the semester and the summer in front of everyone. I was nervous, but happy at the same, time since we could communicate altogether, which is quite difficult during the semester.
  • Suji: Compared to the previous meeting, the game came alive. I think the talk concert with the professor was a great idea because we could have an honest talk with the professor and other participants. It was valuable to meet other departments and spend time with them.
  • Suyeon: As in other years, we all gathered and enjoyed a game. The new thing was the Talk Concert, where professor Kang was the host. Unfortunately, my message was not opened.
  • Taehwi: It was really nice that we could meet people from different departments of Hongik Press. The ¡®talk with the professor¡¯ was beneficial, and I also enjoyed the programs that were prepared.
  • Su-ah: During the Hongik Press conference, it was really a great opportunity to learn more about Tidings, but also about other Press groups by doing games and a talk show together. Since this is my first year being a journalist at Tidings, the time I spent in conference was so important.
  • Seoyoung: There was no other time to meet other Press groups, so this three day trip meant something to me. I could know others¡¯ on going plans for their magazine, articles, etc and other little events were also interesting.

It has been about three years since I started working for the Tidings. However, during those three days, I could learn a lot more about other members of not only the Tidings, but also the other departments of Hongik Press. It was a very special and fresh experience for me, and I believe it was the same for everyone else who attended the summer retreat. Taking this opportunity, I hope the campus press departments could plan meaningful activities from now on.
