Editorial _ vol.214

Time flies. It seems as if it was just yesterday that I entered Tidings as a cub reporter, but I have already participated and proceeded with this new issue as the Managing Editor. My first semester at the Tidings was before COVID-19¡¯s breakout, when everything we did was face-to-face. The following year I worked as a Deputy Editor after the breakout in 2020, now having all our meetings and revisions online; I think this added to making the time flow quickly and the position changes in Tidings dull. Maybe that is why it still feels unfamiliar being a Managing Editor, even while I am writing this editorial.

As I took over the overall publication of this magazine, I spent the beginning of the semester in a hurry, changing the previous all non-face-to-face meetings to some face-to-face and revitalizing the reporters' participation. When the online meetings first started to be substituted for the face-to-face discussions, the reporters including myself were still enthusiastic in making our publication interesting. However, as the online meetings continued, we could not deny that we did not participate as much as before to get the best out of each other. We cared mostly about our own articles. The main forces for publications, I believe, are passion and a sense of responsibility. So, we reporters struggled to actively stay involved with each other for this issue.

The main concern as a magazine publisher is how attractive our magazine is to the readers, how the articles feel as a whole, and whether they are visually comfortable and readable. To cover these concerns, we came up with the "Keyword" project in the March issue last year. This let us discover material to write about more creatively and coherrently, so we decided to keep this method this year. The keyword for the May issue, selected from a number of suggested ideas, is "time."

"Time" permeates our daily lives. From how many hours one slept yesterday, to how many minutes it took to get to school today, what time one ate his(or her) meal, to when one has an appointment. We also think about deeper thoughts like when time passed the fastest in life, what was the most meaningful time so far, and what is expected in the future. There are so many examples that show how deeply time intervenes in our lives in two ways: we can realize that time is not just a numerical division but a spiritual notion that depends on the person.

We, after having spent 2020 social distancing, once again face a semester apart, not knowing when COVID-19 will end. The year 2020 may have been a time when many people were bored more than any other time in the past, being dull and unaware of time and season¡¯s change. Tidings reporters, for this May issue, took time to think about what "time" is, and weaved interesting stories about time itself and time in the past, present, and the future. We hope you have time to think about "time" in many different ways while reading this issue.
