Happy Festival.... For Whom?

Festival, the word which brings excitement just by hearing it. And, among the festivals, there is a festival called the ¡®flower of youth¡¯ which is the university festival. The university festival has a special freedom and energy, so many people come to the festival to enjoy that freedom and energy. Hongik University festival, is called ¡®The Best University Festival¡¯ because of its unique atmosphere and fame. So, there are many people who come to enjoy the festival. Though many visitors come to the festival, the main attendees of university festivals are students. But they can`t enjoy festival because of ¡®visitors¡¯. In this article, we discuss this problem of ¡®visitors¡¯.

Choi Yugyeong : I object to visitors at the festival, because I remember one festival day. On that day, I attended a lecture which was from 4 to 6 p.m. There were some visitors for the festival who were very noisy. So, I couldn`t focus on my lecture which was very important for my major. And the Hongik University festival is for Hongik University students, but visitors are obstructing students¡¯ fun because there are so many visitors. And so many people come, so there is a lot of trash on the road. Plus, there is problem of safety from visitors. So, I object to visitors.

Yoo Dayoung : I don`t think I need to object to visitors. We can go and enjoy the festivals of other universities. So, the fact Hongik University doesn`t let other visitors come in is illogical. I think that this visitor problem is characteristic of university festivals.

Choi Bugeun : I think that there is a lot of damage to the residential area near the university when we do the festival. For example, visitors vomit on telephone poles or see a telephone pole as a toilet, or they throw out trash. We can`t control it in university, and it`s hard to control visitors outside the university.

Heo Junyoung : I think that in a case like the Hongik University festival, the festival is so famous that the number of visitors has become so large that it has become a problem that Hongik university students couldn`t enjoy the festival of their own university. But we don`t have a realistic plan for blocking visitors completely. We can`t inspect every single one at the front door of the university. Instead, I think it would be better to benefit Hongik University students. For example, Hongik student¡¯s council made a ¡®Hongdae Zone¡¯ which was a place only for Hongik University students last year. I think that Hongdae Zone`s purpose was good. And I remember that other students liked that Hongdae Zone.

We could divide the festival into pubs and celebrity performances. In celebrity performances, the Hongdae Zone is the benefit for students, and in the pubs, 10 percent of the pubs are assigned to students, or if students show their student ID, each pub will give some special service to them. I think that would make students enjoy the festival more.

Choi Yugyeong : You meantioned the ¡®Hongdae Zone¡¯ I enjoyed a lot of benefits from the Hongdae Zone at that time like other students did, but there were only a few people managing the Hongdae Zone, so visitors were in the Hongdae Zone sometimes. Plus, I remember that there was a person who stumbled in the Hongdae Zone and collided with another person. If we give a benefit to students, we need a manager to handle that benefit.

Park Cheoljoo : As many students have said before, I think that the reason why the visitor problem got out of hand is Hongik University`s popularity and the attitude of the university that does not fit this popularity. There is the student`s council, which doesn`t have control over visitors, but the school isn`t involved in the festival as much as we think. I think the university`s preparing for the festival is only the tents and the place for the pubs and events. If the university helped more with that festival, we could enjoy the festival more, too.

Choi Bugeun : I have an idea about a way to give a benefit to students: we need to classify visitors and students. We need a simple and conspicuous ID, like a bracelet or a stamp. Even if we didn¡¯t do this, we could get benefits if we present our student ID at the front gate. Or it might be necessary to put a time limit on university access to visitors. That time limit could be very useful to control visitors and it could help people to concentrate during their lecture.

Park Jiwon : My stance is this: I think that the reason the university department or the student`s council makes money is for the welfare of students and for future events. But I think we have made the festival too commercial. Therefore, we shouldn¡¯t first think of festival as commercial. And we need to think to enjoy festival. The fact we think about a limit to visitors is for enjoying festival, means we unconsciously view the visitors commercially.
