Different Time, Different Photos, but the Same Spot

The year the Hongik Tidings published its first issue was 1985. In other words, it has been 32 years since the HT has been with Hongik students. Through the prior article covering the achievements of the HT, readers probably saw what the HT has gone through over 32 years.

This section focuses on the 32 years somewhat differently. This article will look through the history with the view of today¡¯s student, studying how the campus we are at and its surroundings have become what they are today. Photos are the main content, not the writing, in this article. Let¡¯s feel the strangeness or familiarity while looking over the pictures that once been in the HT magazine alongside with the photos today showing the same spots.

*This article has sourced material from the special article The History of Hongik University Landscape from the 179th issue of HT magazine.

It is a photo of an aerial view of Hongik University taken in June of 1999.

Figure 1 was taken right after the gym was built. The sculpture signifying the motto of Hongik University, ¡®The Collaboration of Art and Industry¡¯, used to decorate the gate pillars. Now it is on the side wall of the current front gate, Hongmun-gwan.

From Figures 3 and 5 you may notice something familiar, comparing them to Figures 4 and 6, the ¡®Eternal Smile¡¯. Before the appearance of Wau Forest, this area was a plaza with the statue of Lee Heung-soo, the founder of our school, and the back side was a parking lot.

Figures 7 and 9 show where we pass every day, the main intersection in front of Hongmun-gwan. The road from Figures 11 and 13 is the main boulevard heading from the front gate where stores and restaurants are today. The vacant lot placed on the left of Figure 9 is where now Hongdae Playground is located, and the alley from the picture is the one that leads to Cocoon today.

Figures 14 and 15 remind us of the fact that there once were students from elementary, middle, and high school within Hongik University. The picture was taken near Building Z, the former Hongik Elementary School.
